Frederic Edwin Church - Katahdin from Millinocket Camp

Reflections Series Project

The Reflections Series Project is a two-year, multi-tiered arts and cultural initiative from Boreal Theater, designed to connect community, creativity, and place through workshops, exhibitions, and immersive learning experiences.

In 2026, the project centers on In the Footsteps of Frederic Edwin Church, honoring the 200th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Inspired by Church’s deep connection to the Katahdin region, this season invites participants to engage with the landscape as both subject and storyteller.

A cornerstone of the project takes place at the Woodworth Homestead (“Rhodora”) in Millinocket—land that reflects the spirit of the environments Church once explored. Here, students and community members will participate in plein air painting experiences, creating work outdoors in direct response to light, atmosphere, and the natural world.

Through these programs, participants will:

  • Explore the intersection of art, history, and environment
  • Develop skills in observation, composition, and creative expression
  • Reflect on personal and cultural connections to place
  • Contribute to a growing body of community-centered artwork

From student workshops to public exhibitions, the Reflections Series builds a bridge between past and present—honoring artistic legacy while cultivating new voices rooted in the Maine landscape.

Additional programming will include a fall speaker series and a culminating community art exhibition, with more details to be announced soon.
